Chapter Two

Chapter Two
In this chapter, the family is getting ready for the big wedding between Rosaura and Pedro. Nancha and Tita have landed the task of preparing the wedding cake, but since Tita is so sad about the whole event, she can't stop crying. Her tears get in the cake batter, but luckily they don't effect texture or taste of the cake. Tita seems to be going crazy because she thinks she hears a live chick in one of the eggs and she can't even tell that Nancha added food coloring to the icing. Nancha sends her off to bed. While all this is going on with Tita, Nancha has flashbacks  to her past when she also wasn't allowed to marry her fiancé.

Tita had planned to avoid Pedro the entire day in order to keep herself together, except her plan fails when she bumps into him in the kitchen. They have an awkward conversation before Tita quickly escapes. Once the wedding guests start arriving, everyone is just loving the drama of the situation and gossip floats around. Tita stays strong through it all. When the wedding is over and it's time for dinner and cake, the cake seems to have an odd effect on the guests. They all begin getting sick and throwing up, even Rosaura. The book stated that "Everyone there, every last person, fell under this spell, and not very many of them made it to the bathrooms in time- those who didn't joined the collective vomiting that was going on all over the patio." (Esquivel 39) Of course it looks like Tita schemed the whole thing and her mother accuses her. As far as we could tell, as readers, Tita didn't seem to add anything extra to the cake besides her many tears, which quite possibly is the reason for all the sickness. Oh, and top of all that, Nancha is found dead in her room later that day, most likely from a broken heart. Basically, this chapter was filled with lots of interesting scenes and important events.

  1. Your symbol had a pretty big impact on the chapter. My symbol, fire and heat, didn't have such a significant effect on the chapter. Your symbol quite literally made a mess of the entire chapter. The symbol that I had appeared briefly, but didn't affect the overall plot. In the chapter, when Mama Elena is mad at Tita, the author describes her as full of fire. The effect your symbol had on Nacha's character was much more profound. And the effect it had on the party was more comedic than my symbol, because my symbol ultimately caused Mama Elena.
